What's Your Problem?

The Role of Fascia in Your Roofline System

The fascia board is the vertical face of your roof edge — the board that sits at the end of the rafter tails and that your gutter system attaches to directly. When the fascia is sound, it gives the gutter screws something solid to hold in and keeps moisture from reaching the rafter ends. When it rots, the gutters eventually pull free, and water that would have gone through the downspout instead runs down the wall.

In New York, fascia deterioration happens faster than in most markets because of the freeze-thaw cycle and ice dam formation. When ice dam meltwater backs up behind the gutter and works into the fascia board, it enters through any unpainted joint or end grain and begins breaking down the wood fiber from the inside. The surface can look solid — paintable, even — while the interior is structurally compromised. The inspection from the ladder determines the actual condition.

What We Repair and Install

Fascia Board Replacement

Removing deteriorated boards and installing new dimensional lumber or PVC in the same profile. Rafter tails are inspected and repaired if moisture damage has reached the framing.

Aluminum Fascia Capping

Forming and applying aluminum coil stock over existing sound wood fascia. Eliminates the paint cycle, protects against NY freeze-thaw, and lasts 30+ years. Best applied when the underlying board is still structurally solid.

Ice Dam Damage Repair

Fascia boards damaged by years of ice dam meltwater infiltration often require replacement plus inspection of the rafter tails behind them. We address both in the same visit.

Gutter Re-attachment

After fascia replacement, gutters are properly re-hung to the new board with appropriate hardware and pitch. Re-hanging to compromised fascia is a common repeat-service trap that we don't do.

Section Repair

When only a short section of fascia is compromised, we replace that section and match the adjacent material. Profile matching is important on older NY homes with non-standard fascia dimensions.

Rafter Tail Repair

When moisture from failed fascia has reached the structural rafter tails, we repair or sister the affected rafter ends before closing in with new fascia material.

Common Questions

How much does fascia repair cost in New York?
Section repairs run $300–$900 in NY. A full fascia replacement on one side of an average two-story home runs $1,800–$5,000 depending on linear footage, height, and material. Aluminum capping over sound existing wood adds $8–$18 per linear foot. Free inspection gives the specific number for your home.
Why does fascia rot even when gutters are working?
In NY's climate, the primary cause isn't overflow — it's ice dam meltwater backing up behind the gutter and fascia board, and freeze-thaw cycling working into any joint that isn't sealed. Even properly draining gutters don't prevent ice dam infiltration from damaging the fascia behind them.
Should I replace wood fascia or wrap it in aluminum?
When the wood board is structurally sound, aluminum capping is the better long-term choice — it protects the wood from future moisture contact and eliminates the repainting cycle. When the board has lost structural integrity, it needs to be replaced first, then capped. The inspection determines which situation applies.
How do I know if I have fascia rot behind my gutters?
Visible signs include gutters pulling away from the house, paint peeling on the fascia face, or visible gaps between the gutter back and the fascia board. None of these are reliable early indicators — by the time any of them appear, the rot is typically already advanced. The only reliable method is probing the board from a ladder, which is what the free inspection includes.
