Shirley sits on the South Shore of the Town of Brookhaven, bounded by the Carmans River and the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge to its west and running south down William Floyd Parkway toward Smith Point and Moriches Bay. The hamlet was developed from the 1950s onward as affordable housing on small lots, and much of its original stock was modest single-storey construction with shallow overhangs — built to a price, and in a good number of cases built for seasonal use before being winterised later.

Two conditions define roofline work here. Shirley sits low and close to salt marsh, so exterior wood stays damp far longer than it would a few miles inland. And it is exposed — there is very little between these streets and the open water at Smith Point to slow a storm down.

That exposure is also why so much of Shirley's housing now sits higher than it was built. Storm surge pushed well up into the hamlet in 2012, and in the years afterwards a substantial number of homes here were raised onto new piers or foundations to meet flood elevation requirements. Raising a house does more to its roofline than most owners expect. The original construction detail matters just as much. Shallow overhangs were standard on Shirley's early small-lot housing, and a short overhang gives the fascia and the wall beneath it very little protection from rain arriving at an angle — which, off the bay, is how it usually arrives.

Where the overhang is short, the gutter is doing nearly all the work of keeping water off the structure, so a run that has pitched even slightly out of true does real damage quickly rather than gradually.
